This week I was in the studio with Cat van Dark and Lennart. The shoot concept was to shoot a few portraits with very minimalistic lighting. I’m a bit fan of narrow depth of field portraits and wanted to create a lighting style that had a low key look.
I based the shoot around a low powered Bowens 200ws flash head with a 60x80cm soft box as key light. The only other light source was Bowens 400ws fitted with a standard reflector, barn doors, honeycomb grid and colour gels for atmosphere. We were shooting between f1.4 and f3.5 depending on the desired depth of field.
To finish the night off I went for some clamshell lighting with a 80x60cm soft box on top and a 60x60cm soft box on the bottom. The separating between the softboxes was only just big enough foe me to shoot through. I got up to the minimum focus range of my 85mm and shot at f8…
