Soft-Box VS Beauty-Dish

Last Monday nights shoot idea was based around using one key light in the same position. I didn’t want to change the position, power output or the aperture of my camera, simply change the light-modifiers to have a 100% comparison between Soft-Box VS Beauty-Dish.

The objective was to see how much spill light hit the background (this very cool background was built by Thorsten and will feature in future shoots),  and to comparer the shadows around the check and nose area. Lisa has modelled for me before , and Roland joined me as part of my 2013 project.

First up was standard 80×60 Soft-Box  with a Bowen Gemini 400ws flash head,

Then I replaced it for a standard Beauty-Dish

And finally I added a honeycomb filter to the Beauty-Dish

Once we had finished the light test it was time to play. I added a colour get to a 200ws Bowens Gemini that we used to light up the background a bit. I was actually pleasantly surprised how effective a colour gel worked on the black back ground.

Nice comparison. I kinda like the light from the softbox better. But it’s all a matter of preference.

a wee little suggestion for this post? maybe you could put the pics side by side so that readers can see the difference and compare it visually (instead of scrolling up and down.. )
